Building Materials for Decks, Railings, Pergolas, and More.

One of the most difficult decisions to make when looking to have an outdoor structure built is “what type of materials should I use?” Build It Outback will help you design and choose the best product for your project.

Pressure Treated Decking

Pressure Treated

Pressure treated wood has a natural appearance, is a plentiful and renewable resource and is usually the most economical choice. Pressure treated wood is widely used in a large array of applications, mostly due to the fact that the treatment put on the wood increases its strength and durability.

While cedar or composite decking may be used as the deck platform, treated wood is commonly used as posts, beams and joists because of its structural strength and ability to withstand deterioration in ground contact.

Pressure treated wood is not moisture resistent and therefore some annual maintenance is required with waterproofing stains to help protect against moisture and prolong the life of the structure.

Cedar Decking

Cedar

Cedar is a beautiful choice for your outdoor structure or deck. It offers a rich grain texture and a pure colour that blends in with its natural surroundings. Cedar is also inherently resistent to water, decay and insect damage due to the oil preservative it naturally posesses.

Cedar also has less than half the swelling and shrinking tendencies of other types of wood commonly used, so you can be sure that the deck will stay straight and have less chance of buckling or bending.

The rich colour of cedar does tend to fade over time due mostly to weather exposure. In order to maintain that rich, deep colour staining and sealing are recommended every year or two.

Composite Decking

Composite

Composite lumber is a relatively new product on the market. It combines the natural beauty of wood with the outstanding, long-lasting qualities of a man made material. It is made up of wood fibers along with resin to create a product that won’t splinter, crack, warp, or rot.

Unlike traditional lumber, it requires very little maintenance and upkeep. A seasonal wash here or there will let you enjoy it for years to come. However, thisĀ convenient and cutting edge product tends to be a larger financial investment up front when compared to other building materials.

Composite Decking

Exotic Woods

Many other types of exotic, design savvy materials can be used to help create an outdoor oasis such as beautiful IPE or Tiger wood. Build It Outback is pleased to offer various options using luxurious materials for the most discerning and design focused clients.
